Yoga with Toddlers
I’m not very good at yoga. I’m the person tipping over in your yoga class….. every 30 seconds. I acknowledge that there are plenty of benefits though. It coaches the body to use a broader range of muscle groups, it teaches body-awareness, it teaches mindfulness and how to control ones own body. Theres a meditative factor. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any reasons why someone shouldn’t do yoga if their body does it.
I knew I wasn’t the right person to teach my children yoga. I’m not very good at it, and it was the middle of Michigan winter (the snowy part) when I decided to get our then two-year old into it. I decided to go to the place that almost taught me how to knit and crochet and build a tiny house…. I went to YouTube. What I learned from one day is that toddlers want to do yoga. I didn’t want to add to screen time, but I’m glad I did. Cole with do downward dog anywhere on any surface and its amazing. Kids want to do yoga.
I want to get on more of a regular regimen, and would love to find an actual toddler yoga class to take him too, so he can learn more poses and better form, but I’m just so amazed at how fast he took to it.
